Bingyi Artistic Work-“Time Tower”, Nanjing
As one of the core projects of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Lantern Show, the idea of the Time Tower comes from the long poem of contemporary artist Bing Yi in 2019. The building was designed by architect Zhu Xiaodi. Its vertical and horizontal planes have a total of 28 linkages of giant screens. Now it is the only "light building" taking light and information flow as the carrier, and it is also a Chinese-style multimedia building that collects the characteristics of various buildings such as pavilions, terraces, buildings, and towers. It is also a comprehensive stage with large functions and architectural attributes，such as exhibitions, shows, and broadcasts.
The Time Tower is composed of a three-dimensional structure connected by several layers of discs of varying sizes and rising screens with varying areas around the rim, forming a three-dimensional and mutually concealed spatial relationship, transforming the concrete existence into abstract exhibition of space. Through the rendering of the lighting at the bottom of the disc, we successfully control the lighting inside the Time Tower and external performances, so that it has a beautiful artistic effect. It looks like a mysterious crystal from ancient times, exuding mysterious breath in the night sky.
The production of the project took only 28 days. We need to cooperate with the artist to complete the implementation of the project within these 28 days, which includes collecting the appropriate luminaires, making the required slices for projections, completing the debugging of the luminaires and setting the procedures.
We chose 8 parallel light projections to light the bottom of the building structure. The material of projection is essential for such a form. We selected the content of master Bing Yi's painting for projection. The content of these paintings is beautiful, and it is also the main material of master Bing Yi's projection content.
In order to present the image on the building in a better way, we need to make the slices in a proper size according to the imaging distance of the luminaires and then combine them with the luminaires. Through repeated on-site debugging, the angles of luminaires could also be adjusted in a most suitable way.
This art work bursts with vitality. Everything is changing, rather than being static. Our architectural lights need to breathe and move together with the artist's projections. This is also challenging for us. Because it is not easy to interpret and set off this artistic work only by the movement of light, we must achieve the most harmonious blending and matching with projection. What kind of movement of light is most appropriate? We watch the projected video repeatedly and listen to the its music. There is no formula to follow, all of it is perceptual, what we could only do is to perceive.
This is a great work. Architectural lighting conveys the perception deep inside us. Together with the strong visual projections, it creates a moving light and shadow illusion. We create a moving visual feast for the citizens of Nanjing as well as the audience.
