The lighting on the main façade of the chapel is divided into three layers, each with different intensities and color temperatures. The spotlight on the spire of the bell tower is the brightest, which serves as a visual focal point of the façade. The second layer is the main entry with the tiered hole floating above, where warm light overflows from the inside out. The entire façade is washed by delicately tuned dim light, completing the third layer of lighting treatments.
In the main entry, we integrate a series of warm white linear lighting fixtures into each section of arches. Here we create an awe-inspiring entrance by emphasizing the dramatic rhythm of the architecture with the intention of provoking an emotional response and making lasting visual memories for chapel visitors.
The curved shape continues into the interior of the chapel. As part of our process, we employed the use of 3D modeling and visualization to analyze the relationship between the space and the lighting. Through the study, we could accurately identify where it is best on the curve of the ceiling to accentuate this stunning architectural element.
Surrounding the angelic building is a reflecting pool, one of the most striking features of the site's landscape. Flat as glass and deep black, the pool is a direct contrast to the soaring snow-white chapel. Our choice was not to install lighting directly into the pool but to rely on the energy bouncing off of the façade. The pool becomes a mirror, creating an unforgettable and otherworldly visual effect.
